WEATHER: Drought continues, Frost Advisory issued for areas west of Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Drought continues...burning ban for our western-most counties…

Look no further than the South Mountain fire in Burke County, and you'll understand how dry it is. A burning ban has been placed on the southern NC mountains and the western part of the WBTV viewing area until further notice. Gaston, Lincoln, Catawba, Alexander, Caldwell, Burke, Avery and Watauga Counties are all included in the ban.

In addition, a Frost Advisory has been issued for areas West of Charlotte this morning, with lows dipping to the mid 30s. At the same time, a Freeze Warning is in effect for Avery County with temperatures already in the 20s at the mountain tops.

Closer to Charlotte, lows in the upper 30s will make for a chillier morning commute. The rest of today and into Friday will be mainly sunny with afternoon readings in the upper 60s to low 70s.

Then another cold front will move through in time for the weekend. While the front won't bring rain, it will take us back to the upper 50s to low 60s for highs with nighttime lows falling to near 32°, even in Charlotte. This will be the coldest air so far this season, and likely the first time reaching freezing for many areas.

The last time we were as cool as Saturday's forecast high of 57° was April 9th (56°) and the last time we were as chilly as Sunday's forecast low of 29° was March 3rd (29°).
