Have you already started your countdown to the holidays? Right after Halloween, you start looking forward to Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. A lot of people forget about some other great days – like Daylight Saving Time! The best part about the end of Daylight Saving Time is the extra hour of sleep you get in the morning – YAY! However, this time change does bring along a set of hazards that requires using extra caution on the road.
The end of Daylight Saving Time means that days will be shorter, it’s darker in the morning, and the sun sets sooner! With the time change in place, your commute in rush hour traffic may be during sunset or even at night. This can be a bit of an adjustment, so Toyota of N Charlotte wants to give you a few reminders on how to stay safe behind the wheel!
Even though the time change gives us an extra hour of sleep, the time change can have physiological effects on your body! In preparation for the end of Daylight Saving Time, make sure to get plenty of rest and even consider setting an alarm to wake up an hour early!
Shorter days also mean that you could end up with bright sun glare while you’re driving! The sun glare can make it very hard to see while driving. To be prepared, make sure that your sun visors are intact and you have a pair of sunglasses on hand! When the sun glare gets too strong, block out the light by pulling down the visor or putting on the sunglasses.
Use defensive driving
For safe driving, always wear your seat belt and abide by road rules. Use defensive driving techniques like leaving following distance, staying alert, and avoiding distractions. Driving defensively will allow you to be ready in case of sudden stops or emergencies. Don’t forget to turn on your headlights so you can see and can be seen!
Pay attention to pedestrians
Studies have shown that the rate of vehicle collisions with pedestrians increase from the month of October to November. This is more than likely due to the earlier sunset, making it harder for drivers to see pedestrians. As a driver, use safe driving practices and keep a close eye out for anyone walking or riding their bike. Don’t forget to make sure your headlights are on so you can see the pedestrians and they can see you!
Nowadays we all have smart phones and cable boxes that automatically change the time, but your car doesn’t! After the time change this weekend, don’t forget to set the clock in your N Charlotte Toyota an hour back!
