WEATHER: Drought continues, cold front brings chance for showers

Look no farther than the South Mountain fire in Burke County, and you'll understand how dry it is. A burning ban has been placed on the southern NC mountains and part of the WBTV viewing area. Gaston, Lincoln, Catawba, Alexander, Caldwell, Burke, Avery and Watauga County are included in the ban.

There is a cold front moving through the area this morning, bringing a few much-needed showers early on.  All of this rain will be gone to our east by 8am, with perhaps a lingering shower holding on a bit longer over the mountains.  After the front moves through, we will clear out and the wind will pick up. Highs will be in the mid to upper 60s early this afternoon with readings falling off by late afternoon.

Thursday and Friday will be mainly sunny with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s. Then another cold front will move through in time for the weekend. While the front won't bring rain, it will take us back to the upper 50s to low 60s for highs with nighttime lows falling to near 32°, even in Charlotte.
