CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A shot was fired during a jewelry store heist. Two crooks got away with nearly $75,000 in cash and jewelry from Pavel's Jewelers on East Woodlawn.

When the first customer of the day was buzzed in just after the store opened, he seemed harmless enough dressed in an orange jacket over a blue polo shirt. Minutes later, a second customer arrived at the front door wearing a long, curly wig and sunglasses.

"The second guy you probably know something was wrong," said CMPD Detective Tori Roddey. "This guy has on what looks like a wig of some kind."

Once he is let in, the first customer in the orange jacket pulls out a gun and points it at the clerk's head.

"The guy was scared out of his mind, and rightfully so - two guys with guns in there, he was shook up," the detective said.

After a visit to the safe, the man in the orange coat used the butt of his gun to try and break the glass display case. It didn't work, so his partner offered advice.

"Saw that he was banging on it, couldn't get in, said 'just shoot it, shoot it to get inside,'" Detective Roddey said.

So he lined up the shot and pulled the trigger, but still couldn't puncture the glass case.

"The suspects weren't thinking, clearly, because if they had thought clearly, they would have said, 'hey, unlock the case.'"

It was a good thing for the store these crooks aren't geniuses.
