Dozens of people packed a local music venue for a special event Tuesday. Friends and family members of Katherine Jones, who went by Ketie, gathered at Snug Harbor for a benefit concert.

Police said Jones was shot and killed early Saturday morning while walking home from her job at the Midwood Smokehouse in Plaza Midwood. Her body was found behind a business located along The Plaza. No suspects have been named in the case.

Jones’ mother, Jevona Livingston, spoke passionately about her daughter outside of Snug Harbor Tuesday night. Surrounded by friends and family, Livingston fought back tears while speaking about her daughter.

“She was beautiful inside and out,” said Livingston. “I have been trying really hard to stay strong for her because she was such a vibrant person and always turned things around.”

The grieving mother told reporters she still doesn’t know exactly what led up to her daughter’s death. She still has unanswered questions about her daughter’s death.

“I’ve been to the memorial. I do not understand how such a well-lighted placed can not have been seen,” explained Livingston.

Livingston also issued a heartfelt message about the people responsible for taking her daughter’s life. She said Ketie would have tried to help the people before they resorted to violence.

“She would have wanted to heal them. She would have noticed something was wrong. She would have tried to fix them,” said Livingston.

The mother preached a message of love and reminded others not to take life for granted.

“There’s not a tomorrow sometimes. Love your people,” said Livingston through teary eyes.

The benefit at Snug Harbor was set-up to help Jones’ family.

A memorial service at Jones’ home in Plaza Midwood is scheduled to be held later in the week.
