Police have charged an 18-year-old who listed his address as "streets of Salisbury" with an armed robbery at the Auto Zone store, and an attempted robbery at the Speedway gas station.

Thomas Gerhard Emmesberger was charged with one count of felony armed robbery and one count of felony attempted armed robbery. He is being held in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $200,000 secured bond.

According to police, the robbery at Auto Zone happened Saturday around 8:45 p.m. when a man, later identified as Emmesberger, who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and a red bandana over his face walked into the store. The man walked in between the cash registers and pointed to what appeared to be a gun hidden inside a black sock.

The clerk believed the man was joking until the suspect reached into the register and grabbed the money. He left the store with $4, according to police.

Police said around 3:25 a.m., someone tried to rob the Speedway at 500 E. Innes Street. The person was wearing similar clothing to the Auto Zone robbery suspect and also demanded money. He had a gun in what looked like a sleeve.

When the man told the clerk he wanted the money, the clerk said "you need to leave," according to police.  He did leave, and was apprehended by police a short time later.

Police are continuing the investigation to see if Emmesberger may have been involved in other robberies in the area.
