CATAWBA, NC (WBTV) -

A house fire Sunday night along Hudson Chapel Road in Catawba County claimed the life of a 60-year-old woman.

A passerby knocked on a neighbor's door to alert them that flames were breaking through the roof of the home next door. By the time fire crews arrived, the roof was collapsing.

Nothing could be done to save the woman inside.

Fire officials are hoping for a positive ID from the Medical Examiner's office but people at the scene said 60 year old Charlotte Gibbs lived alone in the house with her dog. The dog was discovered wandering outside the home after the fire was put out and the body was found inside.

Charlotte's daughter, Chasity, was stunned by the news and believes it was her mother who died.

"She was always there to take care of me," Chasity said.

Charlotte's brother, Steve, said he was having a difficult time with what happened. "It's really hard to take."

Despite his own grief, Steve said it was up to him to stay strong.

"I got to hold together for the rest of them."

Cheryl Flowers, a friend of the victim said it will be painful for the entire community. "Miss Charlotte was a very kind lady."

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
