Spencer, NC (WBTV) -

Police and emergency responders discovered two women who were both apparently having an overdose at a grocery store in Spencer on Friday morning.

Someone called 911 from the Food Lion shopping center in Spencer just before noon to report that a woman was in the bathroom and that she may be having a heart attack.

“We received a call of a cardiac arrest at Food Lion and when we arrived we realized it appeared to be a drug overdose," said Spencer Police Chief Mike James. “Subsequently I discovered another individual in the parking lot who appeared to be overdosed as well.”

Firefighters with the Spencer and Miller's Ferry Fire Departments and emergency services workers with Rowan EMS used the drug Narcan to revive the victims.  The one inside the store was described as being in a life threatening situation.

"Absolutely, absolutely," Chief James added.  "I think if it hadn’t happened where we had help close by then we could have had a fatality from a drug overdose absolutely.”

Chief James said that drugs were recovered from the car, and that now his investigation will focus on finding the person responsible for supplying the drugs that were involved in the incident, and getting help for the two victims.

“That person (the victim) has got to want the help and we’re to the point in our country where I hope these people will wake up and realize 'I’ve got to get help or I’m not going to be here tomorrow for my family and my friends and my children,'" Chief James added.
