Man charged with murder, arson in massive Watauga Co. fire to appear in court this month

WATAUGA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

A man charged with murder and arson in a massive fire in Watauga County over the summer is expected to appear in court this month.

Benjamin Draughon Williford, 30, is expected to appear in court October 25.

Williford is charged in the August 12 fire at the Valle Landing strip mall, which killed one person and injured five others

Valle Landing strip mall is next to Valle Crucis Elementary School on Broadstone Road, just off of Highway 194.

Since the deadly blaze, investigators said they have been gathering evidence and conducting interviews.

Williford was charged with first-degree arson on August 31. Following interviews and an investigation into the fire, Williford was additionally charged with first-degree murder and three counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.
