Spencer, NC (WBTV) -

Lots of efforts are underway to get basic essentials to those suffering in the wake of Hurricane Matthew.

On Tuesday, Salisbury based Food Lion announced a large donation to local food banks as well as gift cards for residents.  The company is also donating $25,000 to the American Red Cross for disaster relief.

In Spencer, students at North Rowan Elementary School are also doing their part. Students in Kristy Sheets' class have been reading and studying about Hurricane Matthew and its impact, particularly on the North Carolina coast.

To go along with the school work, they've collected supplies to help the victims.

"They have researched Hurricane Matthew and decided to collect water and can goods to help others in need," Ms. Sheets told WBTV.  "I am so proud of their kind hearts."

And those receiving the aid will undoubtedly be grateful for their efforts.
