CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Hornets superstar Michael Kidd-Gilchrist helped launch the second WINGS site in Charlotte at Walter G. Byers Elementary School last week. He shared his own development of social and emotional skills and how they propelled his journey into the NBA.
WINGS is a national after school education program teaching elementary age students how to behave well, make good decision and build healthy relationships. It provides programs that weave a comprehensive social and emotional learning curriculum into a fresh and fun after school program – specifically targeted at supporting low-income minority students in grades K-5.

WINGS says kids receive life lessons to help them succeed and be happy, and a safe place to call home after the school day ends.
"We inoculate WINGS kids with social and emotional learning at Bruns Academy and Myers Elementary to help them work through difficult times," Annie Burton, Executive Director of WINGS Charlotte said. "We help WINGS kids develop the empathy, compassion, trust and understanding we so desperately need."
Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts was also on hand, as was:
- Earnest Winston, CMS Chief of Staff
- Stick Williams, Project Lift Board of Directors Chair
- Shaun Barber, Cops and Barbers
- Members of the WINGS Advisory Board and others from the community
