WBTV Speak Out Editorial: St. Jude -- Making a Difference

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Scott Dempsey.

Right now, I’d like you to think of a huge financial debt you have.

Okay…Now imagine someone saying “Don't worry about paying it off – we'll take care of it for you.”

This is one of the promises of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital to their patients and families.

No family receives a bill for the breakthrough treatments given to their child.
How is that possible? Because of fundraisers like the St. Jude Dream Home giveaway.
50 years ago when a child was diagnosed with cancer, he or she had only a 20-percent survival rate.
St. Jude has been able to increase that survival rate to 80 percent, thanks to their innovative research.
Families in our area are benefitting from that research as well. Just ask the Snyders from Charlotte.
Because St. Jude shares its protocol for treatment with doctors and hospitals in the Carolinas,
the Snyders were able to go to the local hospital here to have their son's blood cancer treated.
Not receiving a bill from St. Jude means they can focus on making sure they're son gets well.
Thank you to all who reserved their ticket for this year’s Dream Home.  You are making a difference in the lives of so many families fighting this terrible disease.
You helped raise over a million dollars for the kids of St. Jude’s in this year’s campaign.
