Training camp roster now stands at 25 players
CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers today announced that they have added forwards Patrick Brown, Brock McGinn and Derek Ryan to their training camp roster, which now stands at 25 players. All three had recently been at training camp with the Carolina Hurricanes, with Ryan clearing NHL waivers at noon on Sunday.
An updated training camp roster and schedule are attached to this release.
The Checkers, who split a pair of preseason games in Lehigh Valley this Friday and Saturday, begin their regular season on the road with back-to-back games against the Texas Stars on Oct. 14 and 15. The Hurricanes, who still have 30 players in camp, begin their campaign in Winnipeg on Oct. 13. NHL rosters must be trimmed to 23 active players by Tuesday at 5 p.m.
About today's assignments:
- Brown, 24, served as an alternate captain with the Checkers last season and set career highs with 13 goals and 25 points. One of six players on the Checkers’ current roster whose father either played or coached in the NHL, Brown, whose grandfather was the late New York Giants owner Wellington Mara, scored his first two NHL points with the Hurricanes last season.
- McGinn, 22, ranked second on the Checkers with 19 goals despite playing just 48 AHL games last season. The AHL’s Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 13, he played his first 21 NHL games last season and scored a goal on his first NHL shift. He is one of three brothers (Jamie and Tye McGinn) who have played in the NHL.
- Ryan, 29, served as the Checkers’ captain and led the team in scoring with 55 points (23g, 32a) in his first professional campaign in North America last season. An AHL All-Star, he became the oldest player to make his NHL debut with the Hurricanes, scoring a goal, on March 1.
