JCSU Football Hosts Winston-Salem State on Sunday
Charlotte, N.C. (Oct. 7, 2016) – The Johnson C. Smith University football team will return home this Saturday to take on the defending CIAA champion Winston-Salem State Rams.
JCSU enters the game after falling at CIAA Northern Division opponent Chowan 47-14 on Saturday, Oct. 1. Chowan racked up 650 yards of offense and held JCSU to 251 total yards to take the win.
The Golden Bulls quarterback Harold Herbin (Fayetteville, N.C.) threw for 140 yards on a 14-of-34 effort, including a touchdown toss to freshman Rathel Carter (Winston-Salem, N.C.) in the loss. Running back Tromecio Summers (Charlotte, N.C.) led JCSU on the ground with 51 yards rushing on four carriers while junior receiver Eugene Holmes (Columbia, S.C.) hauled in five passes for 73 yards.
Defensively, JCSU’s Desmond Taylor (Picayune, Miss.) recorded 13 tackles while junior safety Carlo Thomas (East Orange, N.J.) had his fourth interception of the season to go along with nine tackles.
The Rams (3-2, 2-0 CIAA) enter after claiming a 51-10 road win over Lincoln. Against the Lions, WSSU accumulated 478 yards of offense, including 406 rushing yards.
WSSU’s Kerrion Moore finished the evening with 179 yards on nine carries while scoring three touchdowns. Te’Vaughn Hurse added 121 yards on 20 carries and one score. Quarterback A.J. Nocciolo threw for 72 yards on a 6-of-12 effort while throwing two interceptions.
For the Rams defense, Xavier Gregory led the way with seven tackles one sack and one tackle for loss.
Kickoff will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9 at JCSU’s Irwin Belk Complex.
The originally scheduled start time was moved due to severe weather forecasted due to Hurricane Matthew.
