JAMES ISLAND, SC (WBTV) - The funeral for a man killed by a Charlotte police officer has been canceled due to inclement weather from Hurricane Matthew.
The funeral for Keith Lamont Scott was expected to take place Thursday morning on James Island along the coast of South Carolina.
South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley declared a state of emergency and called for coastal evacuations ahead of what could be a dangerous hurricane making landfall on the coast of South Carolina early Saturday morning.
Haley said the state needs to move 1.1 million people off the coast and 100 miles inland.
On September 20, 43-year-old Scott was killed while police were serving a warrant at The Village at College Downs apartment complex on Old Concord Road, in northeast Charlotte. His death sparked protesting across the city, erupting into violence.
Murray's Mortuary of North Charleston posted that the services had been canceled due to the pending weather. It's not clear when the funeral services will be held.
