CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Charlotte-area high school was on lockdown for a short time Thursday after police say a student reportedly had a gun at the school.
According to Mint Hill Police, the school resource officer at Rocky River High School spotted the student standing in the hallway if front of the main office just before 11 a.m. Thursday morning.
"As the officer approached the student started running," police said.
Investigators say the student, whose name has not been released, ran out of the school, into the parking lot and ran to an area near the school.
"The officer and an employee of the school gave chase on foot," police said. They were later able to find the student and take them into custody.
Officers searched the area to where the student was taken into custody and found a small caliber handgun on top of a large dirt mound.
The investigation is still on-going and charges are pending.
Principal Ericia Turners ent a message to parents' phones and later sent an email to parents at the school
"As I called about earlier, this morning, students reported that another student may have had a weapon on campus," she wrote. "The school was immediately placed on lockdown. The weapon was found outside the school buildings. Students and staff are safe."
Turner says the student will be disciplined according to the code of student conduct.
After the weapon was found, the lockdown was lifted.
