CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A man involved in a shootout with officers in Sumter, South Carolina may be in Charlotte.

Dontrell Montese Carter, 25, led officers on a high-speed chase last Sunday along U. S. 521 before crashing in an embankment, deputies say.

As officers responded, deputies say, Carter fired multiple shots from a semi-automatic rifle before running into the woods.

Carter also has multiple pending charges in Sumter.

"Dontrell Montese Carter is a dangerous individual," officials with the Sumter County Sheriff's Office say.

Deputies say they believe he could be staying with a friend in Charlotte who is helping him evade capture.

Carter faces charges for seven counts of attempted murder, domestic violence, failure to stop for a blue light and siren, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, driving under suspension and firing shots into a dwelling. The charges all stem from the incident on Sept. 18.

Carter is described as being around 5'7" and 170 pounds with a medium complexion. He has black hair with dreadlocks, brown eyes and a mustache. Police say its possible Carter altered his appearance.

Anyone who sees Carter is asked to call 911, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office at 803-436-2000 or the Sumter Police Department at 803-436-2700.

A cash reward could be possible for Carter's arrest.
