FCS COACHES POLL: North Dakota State Still Number One

North Dakota State Remains Unanimous No. 1

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second consecutive week, the North Dakota State Bison (3-0) received all 26 possible first-place votes, despite being idle for week four of the FCS season. The Bison, which won their previous three contests in dramatic fashion against Charleston Southern, Eastern Washington and FBS foe Iowa, respectively, will host No. 20 Illinois State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

No. 2 Sam Houston State (3-0), No. 3 Chattanooga (4-0), No. 4 Jacksonville State (3-1) and No. 5 Eastern Washington (3-1) maintained last week’s rankings in this week’s poll after all four teams collected wins on Saturday.

Rounding out the top 10 are No. 6 James Madison (3-1), No. 7 Richmond (3-1), Charleston Southern (2-2) and Western Illinois (3-0) tied for eighth, and The Citadel (3-0), which maintained its No. 10 ranking from last week.

Making its first appearance in the FCS coaches’ poll is Cal Poly at No. 18. The Mustangs upset then-No.6 Montana, 42-41, on Saturday to earn their third consecutive win. Southern Utah, which fell out of the rankings in last week’s poll, climbed back in at No. 24 after its 45-31 win over then-No. 25 Portland State on Saturday.

Ten conferences are represented among the top 25 teams in this week’s poll. The Missouri Valley leads the pack with six ranked teams, followed by the Colonial with five teams. The Big Sky tallied four teams, while the Ohio Valley, Southern and Southland have two teams each. The Big South, Ivy League, Mid-Eastern Atlantic and Patriot League each claimed one representative in the top 25.

The FCS Coaches Poll is based exclusively on a voting panel of head coaches in the FCS under the cooperation of the Collegiate Commissioners Association (CCA) and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and is administered by the Southern Conference.
