ROWAN COUNTY, NC (WBTV) -

The Rowan County Commission has denied a request to build a Dollar General Store on Bringle Ferry Road.

Around 30 people spoke in opposition before the commission Monday night.

"Everything around it was residential and we didn't feel that location was appropriate," Rowan County Commission Chairman Greg Edds said.

The county's planning board previously gave approval for a recommendation to the commission for the Dollar General to build and operate a new store, but many neighbors opposed the decision.

The retail store would have been built at the corner of Bringle Ferry Road and Providence Church Road, with the front of the store and the parking lot entrance on Providence Church Road.

Neighbors said the store would be too close to homes. Neighbors also said there are other retail establishments that are just a few miles away, and the new Dollar General could cause traffic issues.

There are currently seven Dollar General stores in Rowan County.
