Not everyone gets around by car! Depending on where you live or where you’re going, it’s easier to walk or bike. However, when getting around by foot or bicycle, it’s crucial that you keep your personal safety in mind. According to the CDC, 4,735 pedestrians were killed in 2013 in a traffic crash. Unfortunately, pedestrian and vehicle collisions can happen because of the driver and the walker. At Toyota of N Charlotte, we want to help keep everyone safe so we’re sharing pedestrian safety tips!

Pedestrian safety tips

While you’re out and on foot, keep yourself safe using N Charlotte Toyota safety tips like:

  • Use sidewalks and crosswalks. If a sidewalk is not available, you should walk on the shoulder and facing traffic. This allows drivers to be able to see you and you can see them!
  • Avoid distractions. Keep your head up and put away distractions like your phone.
  • Supervise children. If you’re walking with little ones, take them by the hand or keep the as far away from the road as possible.

If you’re not on foot, but on a bike, your safety guidelines change a bit! As a bicyclist, safety tips include:

  • Using the bike lane. Stay off of the sidewalks and use the designated bike lane in the road.
  • Wearing a helmet. Protect your head and neck in case of fall, crash, or collision.
  • Abide by road rules. As a bicyclist on the road, you must obey road signs, traffic lights, and laws.

It’s important to take extra steps to protect yourself as a pedestrian at night! When walking or biking at night, the goal is to increase your visibility to drivers. For pedestrian safety at night:

  • Wear brightly colored or reflective clothing.
  • Carry a flashlight. Light your way so drivers can see you.
  • Only walk and cross the road in well-lit areas.
  • Install bike lights. Flashing lights and lamps make it easier for motorists to see you at night.

Safe driving in a N Charlotte Toyota

From the behind the wheel of a car, you have to keep an eye out for pedestrians and bicyclists. They aren’t just hard to spot at night. If you’re driving during the day, you’re focused on the road in front of you and might not notice people walking or biking near you.

When you’re driving your N Charlotte Toyota, be completely aware of your surroundings. If there is a bicyclist riding behind you when you’re taking a right-hand turn, slow down and wait for the bicyclist to pass you first. You should always yield to pedestrians crossing the street and never block a crosswalk.

At Toyota of N Charlotte, some of our new Toyota vehicles offer advanced safety features that prevent collisions with pedestrians. As part of the pre-collision system, the pedestrian detection uses radar to sense pedestrians in front of your N Charlotte Toyota. This safety feature then alerts the driver and automatically applies the brakes.
