Man killed in York shooting identified

Police investigate double shooting in York

YORK, SC (WBTV) - York Police say they detained one man in connection with a double shooting that left one man dead Monday afternoon.

Investigators said around 4:15 p.m., they received a call for shots fired on Mighty Joe Terrace in York. When investigators arrived, Antonio Nichols, 28, was found dead in the yard, the York County Coroner's Office said.

Another person was suffering from a gunshot wound inside the house. Police said that individual was airlifted to a hospital.

Police also got a description of the vehicle involved. Officers said while they were on the way to the scene, they spotted the vehicle leaving the area.
They said they stopped it and detained the driver.

One person who saw what happened told WBTV that he ducked for cover.

"A car had pulled up and there was shooting and some dudes had spread around the woods, and one dude had jumped out of the car and went up to the field" he said. "They shot from outside on the road."

"I was at work and my wife called and told me my nephew got shot" said Donnie Nichols.

"He was a close friend. We all grew up together" said Shane Howard, who also showed up at the scene.

Investigators haven't yet said what led to the shooting but family and friends said they had an idea.

Howard said "we heard a dude killed him over some street violence, street beef that had been going on, stuff like that."

Neighbors said Monday's shooting wasn't the first time police have been at the house.

Those who knew Nichols said he was 'in and out of trouble but that that don't give another man justification for killing another man."

Howard said the shooting should be a lesson about guns settling disputes.

"We all come together when stuff like this happen, try to stop the gun violence you know, try to tell young people like the young group  - put the weapons down" he said.

Police have not said if the person who was detained is a suspect or a person of interest.

The case is being investigated as a homicide, the York County Coroner's Office said. Autopsy and toxicology tests are pending.
