Staying in Tune with Today's Boomers.
The fact that 10,000 Americans turn 65 every day is not lost on Aldersgate. The senior living community has a legacy of nearly 70 years of focusing on elder needs. Today, the nonprofit is making a thoughtful $70 million investment in its 231-acre campus.
This expansion will add 62 new apartments and villas, an amenity-filled commons with expanded dining venues and programming, a new skilled nursing and rehabilitation center, and expanded memory care support.
The expansion initiative – called “The Gateway Promise” – is more than a physical makeover. Aldersgate is reimagining the way it provides services to residents, as well as broadening its mission of care beyond its walls to help strengthen the eastside community.
“I don’t think we’re overstating it to say that we’re changing the old ideas about retirement living – and making profound advances in healthcare,” said Suzanne Hodge Pugh, CEO. “We’re moving away from the old, regimented care routine – one that looks and feels institutional – to one that’s personalized and tailored to respect the rhythm of each resident’s day. For residents who need short or long-term healthcare, Aldersgate is going to feel more like home than ever before.”
“This expansion has been in the planning stages for three years,” she continued. “The new model puts the resident in control. This isn’t a construction project; it’s an entirely new philosophy.”
Changing the Way Healthcare Is Delivered.
In most skilled care environments today, everyone is on the same schedule – whether it suits the resident or not. In the new Aldersgate model, residents (and their families) can decide when to have meals, when to bathe or shower, when to go outside and when to exercise. There are no nurses’ stations. Nurses will wear smart technology devices, which allow them to roam and engage more frequently with patients.
“It’s less rigid and more human-centric,” said Jeff Weatherhead, chief operating officer. “If you want a milkshake at 10 a.m. or an omelet at 11 p.m., that’s your call because this is your home.”
Launching their innovative model, Aldersgate has already expanded and updated Cuthbertson Village Memory Care. The 15-year-old facility has recently renovated its existing wings, as well as added 16 private memory support suites. Each is divided into a household – four in total – with private kitchens and living rooms that look and feel just like a beautiful home. Central to the households is a Village with a new chapel, beauty salon, movie theatre and open kitchen that is perfect for events or cooking demonstrations. It’s truly trailblazing.
Acknowledging Every Generation's Coming of Age.
The mission of Aldersgate is steadfast: “We honor elders and are committed to creating and fostering diverse, caring communities where everyone has a voice and value.”
