PurpleStride Charlotte fights pancreatic cancer

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - WBTV is a proud sponsor of PurpleStride Charlotte 2016, a fundraiser for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.  WBTV News anchor Maureen O'Boyle will host the event at Charlotte's Marshall Park on Saturday, September 10th.

"Pancreatic cancer is something that's not talked about much," says O'Boyle.  "It may touch a smaller percentage of the population, but the diagnosis can be devastating."  The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with pancreatic cancer is only 8% and early detection is difficult.

Carolina Panthers Head Coach Ron Rivera will be featured for the second consecutive year.  He is serving in the dual role of "Champion of Hope" and "Honorary Starter."  Rivera's brother, Mickey, passed away from pancreatic cancer in 2015.

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is a nationwide network of people dedicated to working together to advance research, support patients and create hope for those affected by the disease.

PurpleStride events have helped contribute more than $35M toward pancreatic cancer research since 2003 and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network has received Charity Navigator's highest four-star rating for sound fiscal management and transparency for 12 consecutive years.
