CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - If you have "smart" devices in your home, such as thermostats or light controls, you know if the internet goes down you're in trouble. Without that connection to cyberspace those devices may not work.
WBTV Cyber Expert Theresa Payton has some advice if you want to keep that smart home operating smoothly. That advice is below:
When the internet goes down, consider it as catastrophic as a power outage if all of your devices are "smart" or Internet driven devices.
1. Consider having back up internet access via one or more mobile hotspot, connect those to the devices that matter the most to you.
2. Ask the vendor of the device or appliance what the "back up" feature or "kill switch" is if the internet is down. If there is no "back up" or "kill switch" option, you might want to reconsider installing it into your home.
