CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - There have been at least five break-ins in the NoDa area - all within three weeks and all within a couple blocks of each other.
And we finally have solid surveillance of one of the crooks.
The Company Store is an eclectic neighborhood bar on Yadkin in NoDa which just opened in March. Just before 1 a.m., the bar got a night visitor wearing a t-shirt bandana who brazenly stood on the front porch, trying to force a window or a door open.
"Uses what looks like a screwdriver," said CMPD Detective Tori Roddey.
But he had no luck with his pry tool.
"He can't get the door open with the screwdriver, so he starts to kick it. He kicks the front door," Detective Roddey said.
After two kicks, the door opens and the alarm sounds. Once inside, he makes a bee-line to the cash drawer.
I asked Detective Roddey if that was significant?
"That tells me either he's been a customer or he has some type of inside knowledge," he answered.
The thief cleaned out the cash and left the bar in 21 seconds. The big surprise here is how easy it was for the burglar to kick the door open.
"He shouldn't be able to kick the door in. The bottom line of any business - someone shouldn't be able to kick the door in, so they probably need to do more dead bolts and get a more secure business," the detective said.
I also wanted to know if this is the man responsible for all those burglaries in the NoDa area over the past few weeks?
"No, Paul, I don't think so. I think this is an isolated incident, based on other information, we have an individual burglar here," Detective Roddey said.
He may not have pulled all the NoDa break-ins, but the crime lab now has his fingerprints as evidence and all they need is a good tip on the Crime Stoppers line at 704-334-1600. Reward money is available and you won't have to leave your name.
