The spirit of liberty will be all over the Charlotte area, with events that include traditional fireworks displays.

Independence Day is particularly special in this area: Mecklenburg County was among the first to declare its independence from the crown, over a year before the 13 Colonies would approve the Declaration of Independence. Here’s how to celebrate:

MONDAY, JULY 4

Charlotte

Best Bet: SkyShow Charlotte: The street party will have kids crafts and activities in an Interactive Kids Area, News Talk 1110 WBT will broadcast live from the street with SkyShow Radio, and various food vendors will be on hand along with an Olde Mecklenburg Brewery beer booth and wine from Shelton Vineyards. Live entertainment scheduled from 3-9 p.m., and the Charlotte Knights take on the Pawtucket Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark at 6:05 p.m. Fireworks after the game. Best Bet: U.S. National Whitewater Center’s Fourth of July Celebration: Events include a cornhole tournament at 3 p.m. (registration $30 per team), and musical performances from Ancient Cities at 4 p.m., Hollis Brown at 6 p.m. and Dr. Dog at 8 p.m. 9:30 p.m. fireworks. 5000 Whitewater Parkway.
