CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Got plans for July 4? Today should be very… Fourth of July-like!
Let's start with the heat because that will be a factor all day long. The coolest part of the day, the morning, won't exactly be cool.
We will be in the 80s by mid morning. Afternoon highs will be in the low 90s.
That may not sound bad but that is above average for this time of year. Plus, there's that July humidity. Dew points will be in the low 70s all day long. That means it will feel almost tropical from morning till night.
Heat indices will be well into the 90s by lunch time and close to 100 late in the afternoon. Even the evening will remain warm. It would seem that things should cool off after the sun goes down and the fireworks start up. However, the humidity levels will keep us in the 80s well past sunset.
Now for the rain chances… What would July 4th be without the possibility of thunderstorms? This year will be no different. If you'll be having your cook-out around lunch time, you have a better chance of staying dry (getting sweaty doesn't count!).
The mountain counties have the best chance for rain early in the day. For the rest of us, thunderstorms are possible any time from the afternoon through the evening. Dinner time cook-outs and fireworks displays could be affected. With any summer time thunderstorms, there's no way to know exactly when or where the storms will pop up.
So, I wouldn't cancel any plans as of now. Keep the WBTV Weather App handy and you can see where the storms are – and where they are moving. Then you'll have up to the minute information to keep you and your family safe.
I hope everyone has a happy and safe Fourth of July! Be smart! Wear the sunscreen, drink plenty of water and head inside if you see lightning or hear thunder.
