GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The idea that Greg Newport even fits into the "senior" division might not sit well with some, seeing as how he's only 46 years old.
But in Kosovo, where the World Adventure Golf Masters Championship was held this past weekend, 46 is the beginning of the senior category.
Newport doesn't mind though, because in that category he finished 3rd. He has been mini-golfing since he was 13.
"Just happened to go out one day, my parents just dropped me off at the Putt-Putt in Gastonia," Newport said.
That particular Putt-Putt location is now Adventure Landing on Franklin Boulevard. That's where we met up with Newport so he could show us some of the skills he used in his first overseas tournament.
"We actually got there Friday afternoon and started practicing real hard on Sunday," Newport said.
As he showed us how to ace certain holes on the course, Newport talked about his time in Pristina, Kosovo.
"The people there were so nice, and it was really nice to be able to be around all the other teams from all the other countries," Newport said.
Team USA placed 5th in the overall competition, and Newport placed 12th individually overall.
While he's an actual touring pro for mini-golf, Newport doesn't play much real golf.
"I played some when I was younger but just couldn't hit the ball straight off the tee. But I realized I was a force on the green," Newport said.
Since he's been a touring professional, Newport has racked up more than $100,000 in winnings.
