Nikki Canale tries to qualify for the Olympics in diving

Marvin Ridge diver Nikki Canale is a 2 time 3A state champion off the 3 meter board.  Now she is trying to achieve her ultimate goal of qualifying for the Olympics.

This Saturday, she will be in Indianapolis competing at the USA Diving Olympic Trials.

28 of the best diver in the country in the 3 meter event will battle for the 2 spots that will go on to the Olympics in Rio.

"It's just a great honor," said Canale.  "It comes every 4 years so it's a really good opportunity."

Canale quit gymnastics at the age of 12 and at the urging of her parents gave diving a try and she has not looked back.

The work is hard as she generally puts in 16 hours a week in training.  But it's her persistence that has put her in this position.

"Everyone has done a belly flop into the water and no matter how good a diver you are, you hit belly flops once in a while," said Canale's coach Aaron Hintz.  "If you decide to stay down once you have been knocked down, diving is not the right sport for you."

This is Canele's first shot trying out for the Olympic team and she knows it won't be easy.  Nervous and excited at the same time, she just wants to go to Indiana and put on a good show.  She wants to leave an impression that this will not be her last chance at possibly representing her country in diving.

"I'm just looking more toward 2020," said Canale.  "It's a good opportunity to get some practice under my belt."
