Iredell deputies shoot suspect wielding baseball bat

IREDELL COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Iredell County deputies shot and killed a man Friday who they say was attacking them with a baseball bat.

The Sheriff's Office says 29-year-old Clayton Thomas Millsaps of Statesville had already assaulted two other people before he charged at two deputies while swinging an aluminum bat. Deputies say they ordered Millsaps to stop and drop the bat, but he continued to charge them. The deputies then opened fire and killed Millsaps.

The incident began as a domestic disturbance call at 9:41 pm Friday. Someone reported that a man was harassing and threatening people at a home on Estes Road.

As deputies were speaking with people on the scene, they saw a man run from a concealed location in the woods and assault two people, including one person who tried to intervene. When deputies tried to stop him, he reportedly charged at the deputies.

The Iredell Sheriff's Office said SBI is investigating and that they believe the deputies responded appropriately.

"Our thoughts are with everyone involved in the shooting. However, the suspect's decision to attack several people on the property with a deadly weapon and then attempting to incapacitate or kill the officers forced the response from law enforcement," said a release from the Sheriff's Office.

The Sheriff said the deputies involved have over 10 years experience in law enforcement and are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
