SWANSEA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina lawmaker says he's proposed a way to help smaller power companies and utility customers as the state continues to deal with fallout from a multi-billion dollar nuclear construction debacle. Beaufort Sen. Tom Davis tells The Associated Press he's filed a bill to require utilities to buy wholesale power from independent power producers if the smaller companies can make the power more affordable.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A Virginia utility that wants to buy a troubled South Carolina utility says its customers would pay nearly $4 billion for a failed nuclear project. State regulators said Wednesday the plan by Dominion Energy would require residential customers of South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. to pay nearly $1.8 billion. The rest would come from business customers of the South Carolina utility.
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Sheriff's deputies in South Carolina have captured a suspect in a shooting that killed one person and injured another. Richland County sheriff's deputies were called to a shooting late Wednesday afternoon and found the victims. Their names have not been released. An hour-long search resulted in the arrest of 21-yea-rold Kenneth Dylan Shirley, who is charged with murder and five counts of attempted murder.
MIAMI (AP) - A meteorologist who aided emergency response efforts along the Gulf Coast after the 2010 oil spill has been tapped to lead the U.S. government's hurricane forecasting hub in Miami. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced Thursday that Kenneth Graham will be the next director of the National Hurricane Center. Graham has been the meteorologist-in-charge of the National Weather Service's New Orleans-Baton Rouge office since 2008.
