Crime Stoppers: Sweet tooth bandit

Crime Stoppers: CMPD looking for robbery suspect

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A robber with a sweet tooth paid a visit to a 7-Eleven, but he wasn't there for the Slurpee.

A large man, about 6'3" in height, entered the convenience store on Yorkmont Road just before 11 a.m. on a Saturday.

He took something you might not expect to the counter.

"Sour gummy worms," said CMPD Detective Tori Roddey. "Sour gummy worms is what he put up there to purchase."

But it's what happened next that is the real shocker.

"He gets out his money, pays the lady and as soon as she opens the register, he reaches over to grab the money," Detective Roddey said, "but she grabbed his hand and said, 'hey what are you doing?' And that's when he grabbed a gun out of his waistband and pointed it at the lady."

He told her to back off or he would shoot. She backed off.

"At that time he grabbed all the money he could see in the cash register, grabbed his gummy worms and took off," the detective said.

It appeared he walked away from the store down nearby Beam Road.

"This guy's probably a local. I would say he probably came by there a couple times and noticed this lady's in there by herself and decided this was the day he was going to rob her," Detective Roddey said.

The clerk was unhurt, but frightened. She said she'd never seen the man before.

"The good news is we got a good description of the guy. He's about six-foot-three, he has a unique 'Under Armor' hat on, with some shades, black shirt, blue jeans and brown boots," Roddey explained.

If the large man who likes sour gummy worms rings a bell, call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 and you won't have to leave your name to earn something sweeter than gummies.
