Molly's Kids: How to bring a smile to a Hickory boy trapped in hospital on his birthday

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) -

Happy Belated Birthday to Jake Leatherman!

The Hickory 5-year-old celebrated inside Children's Hospital of Philadelphia last Thursday, May 26th. Despite this adorably happy photo, Jake is feeling kinda crummy right now because he has to be in Philly the next few weeks.

Jake is one our #MollysKids. He's fighting leukemia. He recently got word his transplant didn’t work and the cancer had returned.

"There is really no way to describe how news of a relapse broke my heart again," said mom Crystal Leatherman. "We wanted to make his birthday something special."

Hopefully this post will bring about a well-deserved smile... and maybe get him some mail?

Here's my idea. I know his birthday was six days ago - that's my fault. I missed posting on the actual day. But don't 5-year-olds deserve to celebrate birthdays for at least two weeks?? Especially when they're trapped in a hospital away from home??

Yes. I agree.

So... Crystal gave me permission to share the address of the hospital where Jake is staying. He loves mail. Feel to send him a birthday card. Or have your kids draw him one so he can hear from other children. It's not about "buying" a card as much as it is the thought.
