CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A door left open leads to an unlocked safe and the theft of hundreds of dollars. But the big dough at a pizza place was overlooked.

The Benny Penellos pizza restaurant on North Davidson happened to have an unlocked side door on a Monday morning.

"It was explained to us a lot of the employees go outside for smoke breaks and they propped the door open," said CMPD Detective Tori Roddey. "So what we're thinking is, an employee late at night was closing up but forgot the door and [the burglar had] easy access the next morning."

A man wearing a backpack and a jersey with the lettering "South Point Denim Company" across the chest is seen on surveillance just poking around the restaurant.

One of the owners had just left to run errands, so this man had run of the place.

When he stuck his head in the back store room, he found a jackpot. It was a safe buried on a shelf full of drinks, but this safe was broken with a door that was open.

"Soon as he walked in he noticed the safe sitting there," said the detective. "The safe didn't lock, so it was easy picking for him."

Surveillance shows him remove a black money purse and stick it in his waistband under his jersey.

He quickly left the store with hundreds of dollars in petty cash. It's good dough from a pizza parlor. But what he didn't realize - that was also untouched in the safe - were thousands of dollars set to be deposited that day.

Do you know him? A reward is available by calling Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
