CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Sue Smuda first reached out four-and-a-half months ago. She was trying to find another teenager in our area with the same rare disease as her daughter Abigale. HAE. Hereditary Angioedema.

Tons of you responded with advice and helped the family network. See that January 9th post here.

Tonight, an update. A good one!

Abigale won Miss Pre-Teen South Carolina in Myrtle Beach and will be headed to Nashville for Nationals in July.

"She doesn't let anything stop her," Sue said. "I'm beyond proud."

It's especially notable because HAE affects Abigale's face, throat, eyes and mouth. It causes swelling. It was getting so bad the day after the pageant she had to go up on her dose of medication.

"In part because of everyone giving ideas on your Facebook post, we found a wonderful HAE specialist in Charlotte," Sue said. "The specialist has been great. Abby has recently started having choking issues and we've realized her vocal chords aren't acting properly. We're still waiting to hear why. With so little known about HAE this could be related to the disease, or not at all."

Like any parent, Sue says she's worried. But she also says she knows they're in great hands.

And mostly Abigale, Congratulations! Good luck in July. You know we'll want to hear how it goes.

Some landowners believe the problem stems from the fact that Lincoln County does not have a stormwater ordinance, which is why they say they've seen an overflow of runoff water since the start of this development.
