(WBTV) -

A New York man has set a new Guinness World Record after recently at 22 Carolina Reaper peppers in less than 60 seconds!

The Reaper is currently the "World's Hottest Pepper" as named by the Guinness World Record in November 2013. It is the creation of Fort Mill businessman Ed Currie. Currie owns the "Pucker Butt Pepper Company" in downtown Fort Mill.

The Carolina Reaper measures at 1.6 million units on the Scoville Scale. For some perspective, a jalapeno pepper measures around 6,000 units. That's more than 266x the heat of a jalapeno.

Wayne Algenio, from Queens, New York, ate 22 Carolina Reaper peppers (119 grams) which beat the previous record by 50 grams! It happened April 24 at the Puckerbutt Pepper Company's Smokin' Ed's Reaper Eating Challenge at the NYC Hot Sauce Expo in Brooklyn.

Algenio had to eat as many peppers as he could in 60 seconds then wait an additional minute without throwing up or drinking for the record to count.

Tuesday, our own Kristen Hampton went down to Fort Mill to meet up with Ed and try her own challenge. Eating a tiny fraction of what Algenio ate, set Hampton ablaze. Along with being excruciatingly painful in your mouth, the Carolina Reaper causes physiological reactions like dizziness and profuse sweating.

This is the fifth time Hampton has eaten part of a Reaper pepper and this time, she had more than 1/4th of the pepper.

“There are no words to describe the terrible feeling that comes over you about a minute after you eat it,” Hampton said.

“I don’t know how that guy survived it,” she said, referring to Algenio.

Ed Currie said Algenio passed out shortly after finishing his challenge but declined to go to the hospital.
