Taxes rising

Hi everyone, this is Paul Cameron at my desk in the WBTV Newsroom.

Live in Charlotte?  Your taxes are probably going up.  The city manager tonight recommended what he calls a minor increase in property taxes to pay for 93 new police officers and firefighters.  That amounts to about an extra dollar a month for most taxpayers.   In addition, Charlotte Water wants and extra $2.50 a month for improvements.

We now know a lightning strike started the fire at a south Charlotte strip mall that cost a 20-year old firefighter his life.  Richard Sheltra died of smoke inhalation when fire investigators say he got disoriented and lost inside the burning golf shop.  Fire crews from all over are sending condolences to the Pineville Fire Department.

Have you checked the latest Powerball Jackpot?  It’s headed north of $380,000,000 and could break the all-time record.  Next drawing is Wednesday night.

In Cramerton tonight, a person was hit and killed by a moving train.  Officials are working to identify the victim.  We’re asking why they were near the tracks.

If you haven’t heard the unusual story of the baby born during a traffic jam on I-77, you might be in for a stunner.  Mom knew her baby girl wouldn’t wait for traffic to clear, so she got out of her car, held on to the guardrail and the miracle of birth just happened.

Please join Molly Grantham, Eric Thomas, Delano Little and me for WBTV News at 11:00 tonight!
