BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WECT) -

Brunswick County Drug Enforcement agents have arrested a Wilmington man in the largest Fentanyl bust in county history.

According to officials, Troy Ahkeem Wilson, 37, was arrested April 29 during a traffic stop and charged with trafficking in opium/heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Emily Flax, spokesperson for the sheriff's office, said 118 grams of Fentanyl was seized from Wilson, which is the largest amount the department has ever seen.

According to the CDC, Fentanyl is a powerful, synthetic opioid that is 80 times stronger than morphine and hundreds of times more potent than heroin. It's usually prescribed to advanced-stage cancer patients to help alleviate chronic pain.

CDC officials believe the surge in availability of Illicitly-manufactured Fentanyl is contributing to the nation's epidemic of opioid overdoses.

Illicitly-manufactured Fentanyl is typically mixed with heroin or cocaine to increase euphoric effects.

Wilson was booked in the Brunswick County Detention Center under a $2 million bond.
