Your key-less entry vehicle can be hacked

Hackers find way into keyless cars

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Hackers can find their way into just about everything, it seems.  Your car included.

More new cars are coming equipped with key-less entry which is convenient and seems secure.  However, our Cyber Expert says just like with most types of technology, hackers are figuring out how to get in.

Theresa Payton, CEO of Fortalice Solutions, says if you have key-less entry your car can be stolen and thieves are using a device that costs them less than $250 to do it.   That is according to German auto experts who have done the research.

"All the hackers have to do is be close the the keyless entry device when it is being used.  The device they have lets them into your car just by being close to you when you use your key fob," Payton said.

Unfortunately, Payton says, there isn't much you can do to avoid becoming a victim at this point.  You can ask your car dealer what anti-theft technology they have in place to make sure counterfeit fobs can't be used.
