CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Violent crime typically takes Sunday's off, but that wasn't so at the Los Reyes Mini Mart on Sharon Lakes Road. The convenience store got robbed, and it now has a bullet hole to patch.
At 2:45 on a Sunday afternoon, two customers were in the store. Suddenly, a masked man in a hoodie rushes in, pulls out a gun, racks it, jumps in front of the customers and demands money from the clerk.
Then, he turns to one of the customers, and fires a shot in the floor at his feet.
"He turns around and yells, 'this is for you, dog,' and shoots the floor," said CMPD Detective Tori Roddey.
After he shoots the floor, he continued to jab and poke his gun at customers and at the clerk. Detective Roddey thinks it was either a case of adrenaline rush, or possibly, he was jacked up on drugs.
There's yet another twist to the story - when the crook wants something he shouldn't have known about.
"Also, he tells [the clerk] 'give me the money that's on the side,' which was very peculiar because no customers can see that money," Detective Roddey said.
Police believe this must have been an inside job with inside knowledge.
"Somebody may have given him the inside scoop on that money, because she said nobody would know about that money," Roddey said.
The robber only spoke Spanish. He's short - between 5'4" and 5'6" - with olive skin and a goatee. He ran out of the mini-mart and toward apartments on Sharon Lakes.
What about recovery of the bullet for evidence? Apparently, the bullet fragmented badly and ricocheted so only the shell was recovered.
