KINGS MOUNTAIN, NC (WBTV) - The gigantic screen rises above the trees that surround it. It looks massive when you first pull into the lot that Preston Brown hopes will soon hold hundreds of cars.
"Right now it can hold about 450 cars, but when we add more spots we're hoping to be able to fit 600 cars in here," Brown said of the field that slopes down toward the screen.
Brown's father owned and operated Joy Theater in Kings Mountain for years. Brown grew up working there and wanted to get back into the business. I wasn't cheap.
"This whole thing costs $120,000," Brown pointed to the massive digital projector that sends a crystal clear image to the 50 foot by 100 foot screen.
Brown has invested a lot of money into not just the projector, but the facilities at the site of the drive-in. A concession stand will serve hamburgers, hotdogs, pizza, and other dinner favorites. It's more of a full scale kitchen than a concession stand.
Family members and friends have helped in the journey and with 2 weeks until the scheduled opening date, they're working to put the finishing touches on the theater.
Brown believes his screen is one of the largest in the country, and hopes it will draw thousands out to enjoy a movie. Featured attractions will be new releases just like in a regular movie theater.
"It's just a part of our past I'm trying to bring back," Brown said.
The facility is scheduled to open May 6.
