Superstar young artist coming to Charlotte in May

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Last year CBS Sunday Morning did a great feature on Jeffrey Owen Hanson. I'm sitting here watching this morning's show, thinking about that feature from last May. He's top-of-mind because I recently found out he's coming to Charlotte next month. I can't wait!

If you don't know Jeffrey's story, it's worth telling.

Jeffrey lives in Kansas. His path began years ago while undergoing chemo and radiation. During the treatments he started painting watercolor notecards. His paintings now go for thousands. This short video explains it well.

A couple days ago I received a beautiful hardback book in the mail from his mom. Totally out-of-the-blue.

"This book is my son's story," she wrote. "My son uses his gift of art to help power the world. I know we'll see you in May and I wanted to introduce ourselves in advance. This book explains why I'm so proud of him."

Jeffrey is flying in for is the 7th annual Martin Truex Jr. Foundation "Catwalk for a Cause" on May 18th. Jeffrey will have an original painting in the live auction. The childhood cancer fashion show fundraiser is a signature event just days ahead of the All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. I'm honored to be this year's emcee.

When I watched his story on CBS Sunday morning I had no idea I'd someday meet the masterpiece-making superstar. Fun thought. Wanted to share while I had a moment AND, more importantly, wanted to give Jeffrey a big pre-welcome "hi" to the Carolinas.
