Let me just start by saying, that North Carolina vs Villanova national championship game is the best national title game EVER! That's just my opinion and I'm sticking with it.
It's not every day or every year that you get to see a championship won on a buzzer beater. Heck, 1983 was the last and only time a title was won at the buzzer and it was a great one as NC State's Lorenzo Charles dunked one in to beat mighty Houston led by Phi Slama Jama.
Many will belly ache about the officiating last night and yes, it was bad. But it was bad both ways and like it or not, the bad officiating was a part of why the game will be remembered. It isn't the ultimate reason why this game will be remembered though.
In spite of some bad calls that Heels fans may not like, UNC still had their chances in the end and almost pulled it out.
Down by 10 with 5 minutes to go, I thought the game was over, but North Carolina showed heart and built the drama down the stretch with a furious comeback.
And the shot by Marcus Paige with 4 seconds to go, was simply AMAZING! He has proven over his 4 years that he is CLUTCH.
But the shot by Kris Jenkins to win it at the buzzer is a thing of legend. Get ready to see that shot EVERY March before the start of the tournament. No matter what Jenkins does from this point forward in basketball, he will FOREVER be remembered for that one shot. He may not be very welcomed in the state of North Carolina, but there are 49 other states in this beautiful country.
Another reason I feel this game is the best of all time is the fact that everyone just thought the Heels would roll to the victory. I had some die hard Heels fans tell me the title was in the bag once they got to the Final Four. There was no one in Houston who could beat UNC. But if we learned anything from Super Bowl 50 when everyone thought the Panthers would beat the Broncos, nothing is for certain in sports. The lesson was served up again to a Carolina team for the 2nd time in 2016 and this is a real tough one to stomach.
But could anyone really be surprised by this finish? This basketball season was full of surprises and no one was ever the dominate team. During the regular season, 6 teams were #1 in the nation. That is the most since the 1982-83 season where 7 teams claimed the top spot. And in the end, a team no one thought would make it out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament ended up winning it all.
This is certainly a season to remember and I for one can't wait until the start of the 2016-17 season, but take your time coming back college round ball. I need a vacation and an exciting football season (college and pro) is up first.
