INDIAN TRAIL, NC (WBTV) - Peaches the baby emu can't walk properly or even stand because of a poorly developed left leg. The small flightless bird is now getting a second chance at life thanks to the Carolina Waterfowl Rescue.
Peaches is scheduled to undergo surgery to fix her leg Monday afternoon.
"She's going to break the bone and put it in position, then put a series of fixator rings on it," said Angela Santaniello, a volunteer who's fostering Peaches.
Currently, Peaches undergoes physical therapy several times a day while wearing a harness. Santaniello helps simulate weight-bearing on the bird's functioning leg so it doesn't lose muscle tone.
Peaches doesn't seem to have a clue there's anything wrong with her leg. She quietly peeps while hopping around in search of mealworms.
Without surgery, Peaches wouldn't stand much of a chance.
