UNION COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - A school psychologist is facing charges after a teenager was reportedly assaulted at a middle school in Union County last week.
According to the Monroe Police Department, officers responded to the school Thursday afternoon around 12:35 p.m. to the report of an assault that occurred at the school.
Officers were told that a 14 year old juvenile student was reportedly assaulted by a staff member of the school.
An arrest warrant was issued for 53-year-old Dayle Kimball Rust Jr for simple assault after an investigation by Monroe Police, Union County Public Schools, and the Union County District Attorney's Office.
Tuesday afternoon, WBTV spoke with concerned parents in the Monroe area.
"I discipline my kids and they know that there is only one reason to go to school and that is to learn," Cecile Allen told WBTV.
Dishay Funderburk told WBTV she was especially disturbed to hear that the allegations were made against a school psychologist.
"A psychologist should be there trying to help this child and figure out what is wrong with this child instead of assaulting this child. Something needs to be done about the situation," Funderburk said.
Rust, a school psychologist with the Union County Public School System, turned himself in once he learned there were charges pending, according to the sheriff's office.
School officials say he is currently suspended with pay, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Rust has a court date of April 6.
