Before it’s time to get your hands dirty, it’s important that you have all the tools and materials you need. When performing a cheap oil change, our Charlotte auto service techs want remind you to first make sure you have:
Once you’ve gathered all the supplies you need, it’s time to begin! To access your oil pan and oil filter, you’ll need to raise your car up off of the ground. Use the car jack to safely raise the car. Once it’s up, make sure it is secure and then climb under! Once you’re underneath the car, you’re ready to begin an oil change!
1. Place the drain pan underneath the oil pan of your car and locate the drain plug. Use the socket wrench to remove the plug, and allow several minutes for all of the old oil to drain from the car. Once it’s all drained, replace the drain plug and ensure it is secure and tightly sealed.
2. Locate the oil filter, and remove it using the oil filter wrench. Replace it with the new oil filter and screw it in tightly.
3. Get under the hood of the car and place the funnel inside the motor oil reservoir. Pour the fresh oil in. Check your owner’s manual for the proper type and amount of oil that your car requires.
4. Turn your vehicle on and let it run for several minutes to circulate the new oil through the engine! Check the dipstick and ensure the fluid level is correct.

For example, before you change your oil, you should let your car run for a few minutes as to warm up the oil. The oil will drain faster this way. They also suggest applying a bit of oil to the gasket of the new oil filter. This will create a better seal and ensure the oil filter will be doing its job.
