Uber: How the service stacks up against a traditional taxi

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Uber, the ride-sharing app, launched in Huntsville Friday. The service is a popular alternative to traditional taxi rides, so we decided to see how the service stacks up against a taxi. We selected the same pick-up location, same destination and measured the fare and total time from requesting service, until exiting the ride at our destination.

We drove to Alabama A&M's campus around 6:30 p.m. and requested an Uber. It took the driver, Charles, only five minutes to arrive to the location which is just a four mile ride to downtown Huntsville.

The total ride lasted about 15 minutes and the cost for the trip was $5.75, which is the minimum fare for an Uber ride in Huntsville.

Once we arrived back to Alabama A&M, we called a a taxi, requesting the same route. The taxi said it would take 20 minutes for them to arrive, but it took longer than that for the cab to arrive.

We hadn't even begun our ride to downtown Huntsville and already Uber was faster. Not even halfway to the destination, the fare exceeded $5.75. The total fare was $10.30 plus tip.

So there you have it: Same pick-up, same destination, from request to drop-off Uber was 15 minutes and cost $5.75. A taxi took 35 minutes and cost $10.30 plus tip.

This was just one trial and other trials at different times and locations could produce different results. Different times of day and days of the week could affect the availability, rates and travel time.
