Crime Stoppers: Pickaxe burglars hitting businesses

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A two-man team of burglars is hitting businesses in Charlotte and Matthews, using an unusual landscaping tool to pry open doors.

Surveillance video from Woodland Drive near Eastway at 2:53 a.m. shows two men forcing their way in - using a gardening pick axe. They've broken into a catering company. But inside, the pickings are slim because the business had just recently closed its doors for good.

"They didn't get much out of this place," said Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police (CMPD) Detective Tori Roddey. "They end up taking a TV off the wall, a 32-inch TV, and got some other crystal ware the owner had laying around."

Not satisfied, they pried a door open to an adjoining business and made their way into the office, looking for booty.

"When they went to the second place, that's when they got spooked," Detective Roddey said. "That place had an actual alarm so they weren't in there long."

They got nothing to steal from the second business and raced to get out before the cops showed up.

"Both had thick gloves and what looked like mechanic outfits," Detective Roddey said. "One guy looks like early 30s, bald headed, very distinguishable face. The other one was older guy, looked like he was in his early 50s, with a mustache and toboggan."

I wondered if these two men had been spotted in any other breaking and entering cases? Detective Roddey believes so.

"According to our reports, these same two guys were recognized in another B&E in Matthews. So I think these guys are pretty much on a spree."

Because the surveillance video is so good, police are hoping these two men will be identified before they strike again.

Call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 if you can help. You won't have to leave your name and you could earn a hefty reward.
