CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

A UNCC student and his neighbor helped a women deliver her baby boy in an apartment breezeway Tuesday morning.

Daniel Kepple, a junior biology major, was leaving for school when he noticed the woman lying on the ground outside his Waterford Hills apartment on Harris Boulevard.

"I asked if she was okay and she said, 'no, I'm about to go into labor,'" Daniel said.

Daniel called his mother who is a nurse while his roommate called 911.

Neighbor Kathy Hardee Hammonds came outside of her apartment and also helped the woman who was already in full labor.

"I delivered that little baby and I'd do it again if I had to," Kathy said.

Daniel and Kathy made sure the baby boy was breathing and cleaned him after the mother gave birth.

Firefighters showed up minutes later and took the baby inside Kathy's apartment until an ambulance arrived.

Daniel said he believes the mother and baby are doing okay, although he never got her name. No one is certain where the woman came from.

"I wish I could get in contact with her and make sure they're doing okay," Daniel said.

Daniel is studying virology in college, but says this whole story has caused him to consider adding a medical doctorate onto his plans for a PhD.

He said, "It was an incredible experience."
