Why are they even going to play this Duke at North Carolina basketball game on Wednesday? The numbers and recent play says that the Heels should win this one easily.
Duke fell out the top 25 two weeks ago for the first time since 2007. The Blue Devils just got back in poll Monday after a 63-62 last second win over Virginia on Saturday. They are currently 20th in the nation.
Duke is 19-6 overall and 8-4 in ACC play-- tied for 5th. They haven't finished worse than 3rd since 2007 when they were tied for 5th in conference play.
UNC on the other hand is the #5 team in the land and comes off an impressive 85-64 destruction of Pittsburgh on Sunday night. They are 21-4 and lead the ACC at 10-2.
Talent wise, the Heels are way better than the Blue Devils RIGHT?
Marcus Paige is finally getting healthy again coming off 15 points last night and Brice Johnson has been a constant threat as an athletic big man. He has started all 25 games for the Heels and is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds.
But as much as this looks like a win for the Heels, let's not forget, this is a rivalry (the best in all of sports in my opinion) and BOTH teams will bring their A games to the Dean Dome on Wednesday night.
History also tells us to not fall in love with the favorites. The underdog can make it a great game and even win a few along the way.
Take you back to 1981. North Carolina came in as the #11 team in the nation and Duke wasn't even ranked. Guess what? Duke won 66-65. That's ancient history right? Well, let's bring it to the 90s.
1995, UNC was #2 against a Duke team that finished the season 13-18. That Heels team had to go to double overtime to finally put away the Blue Devils 102-100 in a classic game that gets brought up EVERY time these 2 teams meet.
Need more, how about a year later in 1996. UNC was #8 and Duke was once again unranked, but the Blue Devils only lost by one 73-72.
Let's go to 2000 when Duke was #3 and took on an unranked Heels team that took mighty Duke to overtime before losing 90-86.
I think you get the picture... Wednesday is going to be fun no matter what the records are and who the players are on the floor. The names on the front of the jersey seems to bring the best out of both teams and there should once again be some drama.
By the way, you can catch the drama right here on WBTV Wednesday night at 9PM.
